At the northern entrance to Valence, along a 1.1-km stretch of the Rhône, the Desvigne agency has designed a naturalistic park irrigated by winding paths. The theater esplanade has been reinterpreted as a large, gently sloping lawn overlooking the river. Ile Girôd is open to the public at night, in a dimly lit nocturnal setting. The lighting is in keeping with the theme of the park island, highlighting the presence of vegetation and limiting its impact on the environment.
The installation of the lighting columns, set back from the pathways and close to the trees, creates a subdued atmosphere on the pedestrian links. The 5 very low-power (5W) light points on each mast can be adjusted independently, and the color temperatures are varied to highlight the presence of the vegetation planted as part of the project; the lights catch the foliage in the beams, casting moving shadows on the ground.
The project is designed to limit light pollution to leave room for the biological life of the site’s flora and fauna, and to control power consumption. All equipment operates on presence detection. The vast esplanade facing the Rhône and opening onto the Cussol mountain is left to the night.
