A multidisciplinary team has been appointed to design the public spaces in the Beauséjour ZAC in the municipality of Sainte-Marie on Réunion. The neighbourhood, overlooking the Indian Ocean in the north of the island, is a flagship project for sustainable urban development. Intended to eventually accommodate more than 8,000 residents in 2,300 homes, it represents a unique example of the application of ecological planning principles in a tropical context. The specific geographical characteristics of Réunion (cyclonic rainfall, extreme heat, challenging topography, endemic ecosystems, etc.) call for the design of public spaces with a unique character, rooted in the site, which provide the essential quality of atmosphere needed to meet the challenge of creating a sustainable city.
The lighting scheme focuses on the main thoroughfare of the new neighbourhood, where the street lighting is coloured and dynamic. These lighting installations are also situated in the market square, at the heart of the new neighbourhood.
The pursuit of quality does not stop at public spaces. Secondary roads are treated with the same care. Lighting equipment that is unobtrusive by day, efficient and environmentally friendly (ULOR: 0) illuminates all these routes.
Despite its ambition, the lighting scheme strictly adheres to a tight budget set by the client from the outset of the design phase.
