The competition for the lighting design of Saint-Denis Cathedral on Réunion was won by Scène Publique in February 2010. The lighting was switched on for the first time in December of the same year.

The lighting design for the building is conceived as a scenographic installation: the LED fixtures are positioned at a distance, on street lighting columns around the building. They are not attached to the cathedral itself.

The lighting is coloured and dynamic: the shadows of the tree canopy are deliberately cast onto the white building, adorning it at night with colourful, shifting patterns.

The existing street lighting has been utilised to provide high-quality lighting throughout the cathedral district.

The reflection of the coloured lighting from the cathedral’s white walls creates a lively and colourful atmosphere in the surrounding pedestrian areas. This project has significantly contributed to enhancing the appeal of Saint-Denis town centre.
